This week’s targets

I was hoping to get quite a bit done this week as I took a couple a of days of work but I came down with a cold and that meant I didn’t really feel like doing much, other than burying myself in a book.  I did have my most productive writing day yet, but I don’t seem to have written since then.  I’ve just been pottering.

My goals were:

  • 10 scene ideas for SB (Beth’s Book) – well I’ve sort of done this.  I did some bubble chart brainstorming, which went really well and I have lots of ideas.  Can’t wait to write the book.  I never used to like brainstorming like this for some reason but it seemed to work really well for this book.

  • Hit 4,000 or complete first chapter of fairy story, whichever is greater – done, 5,128 words worth of done.  I will probably cut quite a few of them in the edit.
  • Plot second half of short story – haven’t even looked at this I’m afraid.
  • Finish character building Beth – Not done, I did do some bubble charting for her too but I’ve definitely not finished getting to know her.  I really want to get into her head as this is going to be a first person book.

  • Get a wiki set up for DW- this is underway, I have picked my wiki and I am in the process of copying over and tidying all my hastily typed word documents to do with characters and world-building.

I might start posting my targets at the beginning of the week in an attempt to make myself feel more accountable but that doesn’t seem to have worked in the past so I’ll have a think about that.

Blogistential Crisis

I have two blogs. This one and an anonyblog where I witter on about what I get up to, whinge about my dismal love life, reveal my deepest darkest secrets, occasionally talk about quite racy topics, all that self indulgent crap you see so often on the blogosphere. (Okay, place your bets, how many more words can I shoehorn the word blog into?)

The thing is, this puts me in a bit of a quandary about what to post where. I think if I talk about writing exclusively on here, it will get boring rather quickly but I don’t want to abandon my old blog and post things that would normally go on there here either. Oh I don’t know, I guess I’ll just have to see how things develop.

There’s always reading as well as writing, I don’t talk about books on the other blog. I’ve not been reading much this week but I did finish The Darkest Night, the first in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. It was quite dark and very sexy, there was a certain shower scene that had me contemplating getting in touch with an ex-boyfriend and seeing if he fancied a drink… ;o)

On the writing front, I had a novel idea yesterday that gave me goosebumps. Which I think has to be a good sign.

Theft I tell you

Isn’t it annoying when the authors of books you read build time machines, come and steal your ideas – damn these mind reading, quantum physicist genius author types – then scoot back to when they came from, spin your germ of an idea into gold and write a fabulous book that makes you feel like sulking for a week because it was your idea damn it?

Away with the fairies

Over the last couple of days I’ve been thinking up ideas for short stories to do some practice writing.  I’ve got quite a few now and I’ve noticed that every single one of them has some sort of magical or supernatural element.  I can’t seem to help it.  I tried giving myself random topics and then I had to come up with a story idea, without fail I managed to find a way to make it magic.  I wonder if that says something about me.

Spark of inspiration

I have had an idea.  Which I think is quite a good one.  What I’m not sure about is whether it’s an idea that would make a good ending for this book or could be developed into a main plot for a sequel.  If I use it as a sequel it would make #1 have an unhappy ending and possibly feel unresolved.

I’d rather develop it further and use it as the plot for a second book as I think it has potential.  I’m really not sure how I’d make #1 feel somewhat tied up rather than just set up for #2 though.  Some brainstorming on my whiteboard might be in order (if it wasn’t already full of my scribbles that is – I’m probably going to have to write it all down and wipe the board clean).

God look at me, thinking about sequels when I haven’t even started writing yet!
